Random Picture

I love this picture of Rachel and I (and Lauren all tucked safely in my belly). This was one of the days that Brice's parents brought Rachel to visit me in the hospital while I was there for what seemed like an eternity waiting to have Lauren. Fifteen days is a long time to be in the hospital to have a baby!!! But anyway, I love this picture....

Greatest thing to me is that I don't look half bad 37 weeks pregnant with a 9+ lb baby in my belly...must have been a good day!! =)

Movie Reviews

SO....we don't watch a lot of movies around here. There are obvious reasons but more than anything we just don't take the time to do it. It is something that we have both always enjoyed but we just do other things instead and most of the time if Rachel is awake we are watching Dora! We even have a Netflix subscription and let me just say that they make money off of us!! We keep movies for months at a time with the intention everytime we get a new one of "watching it and sending it back quickly!" Hmm...never happens! I have not even been to the movie theater since I was pregnant with Rachel...I think it was "The Devil Wears Prada" maybe or "The Lake House" not sure which. Anyway, here are two movies that I have seen in the past of them is our latest Netflix movie! =)

flightplan Pictures, Images and Photos

About a lady who is emotionally distraught after losing her husband and decides to move from Germany back to New York with her 6 year old daughter. They are on this HUMONGO plane and she apparently loses her daughter and the crew of the plane tell her that the little girl never got on the plane and the entire movie is dedicated to proving that this lady is nuts.

This was pretty good, I thought. Jodie Foster was great as always and I thought the little girl in this movie was adorable!!! It was a little unrealistic to me just because this airplane was stinkin HUGE and they don't make them that big but whatever! It was entertaining. Not great but good.

bridewars Pictures, Images and Photos

This is about two friends who grew up together and then as grown women both got engaged and wanted to be married the same month and be each other's maid of honor. Something got messed up and their weddings were on the same day and they were in a war about everything wedding - flowers, cake, dress, invitations, etc...they sabatoged each other the entire movie. TOTAL chick flick!!

I thought this was cute! It was really funny and I just love Anne Hathaway. I watched this with two of my very best friends so it made it that much better...wouldn't have been as good with Brice, I don't think. I was even distracted between my two year old who wouldn't go to bed, my 6 week old that wanted to eat, and then I had to pump in the middle of it but it was still an easy watch and simple entertainment.

Went to the Melting Pot last night for dessert. It was FABULOUS!!!! This is only the 2nd time I have ever been and my experience this time was MUCH better than the first. We got two different kinds of chocolate - milk chocolate with crunchy peanut butter (this was my personal favorite) and then turtle chocolate. It was a lot of fun and I really really love their salads!! Caesar salad has these little parmasean encrusted pine nuts that I absolutely LOVE! Good stuff. I had a great time last night with Heather and Krista. It was interesting...we are all a little hormonal..Krista is nearly 9 months pregnant, Heather is just barely pregnant at like 11 weeks, and I am nursing! HA! Thanks to our husbands who allowed us to get out for some girl time! =)

It's Friday!

Product Review: Sand and Sea Table (by request):

We love this thing!!! We have played with it yesterday and today and Rachel LOVES it! She only gets minimally dirty. We contemplated getting the large red crab sandbox for her to sit in (that holds 6 bags of sand!!!) and Brice thought the table would be better for cleanliness as well as interaction from us. He was right. We can play with her and we only get sand/water on our hands. It isn't a messy thing at all. She enjoys moving the water to the sand to make castles and then the sand to the water...I guess just to make it dirty. We love the umbrella that is attached because it keeps the sun off of her for the most part. The table comes with accessories and it only holds 1 bag of 50 lb sand. We like it so far. It was also super easy to put together!!

It has been a few days since I have posted about breastfeeding so it is time again....I just cant get the hang of it...I want to say that I am a pro at 6 weeks but...I'm not!! I bought two books from about breastfeeding. One is great and the other one gets on my nerves. OH...and the term "Baby Friendly" that I blogged about previously was not coined by my hospital system. The book that I don't like refers to this terminology as well! I was happy to know that something so idiotic didn't come from the establishment that I work for (although I am not fond of the idea that they still support this) but I was surprised to know that it was more widely known. Here is the main reason (so far...I just them yesterday) why I like the one book and not so much the other. One of the books talks all about one physician's opinions on how babies should be breastfed and he basically says that anyone that does not agree with him is incompetent and should not be giving advice to breastfeeding mothers. He says if your nipples hurt then you aren't latching on correctly. He doesn't go into details on how to help a mother latch on correctly...basically says to go see a lactation consultant (that, of course, believes as he does). The other book gave specific step by step instructions on what to look for and what to do to make a latch more comfortable and efficient. I was able, after weeks of wrong latching, to get Lauren to FINALLY latch on correctly. She latches great on one side but the other side (coincidentally the side that always has more milk) she has the HARDEST time latching. I am not sure if the problem is me because I am having to manuveur her with my left hand or what the deal is but that nipple is cracked, has bled on occasion and just continues to get hurts! That's also the side that I got mastitis in. ANYWAY, hopefully with this book, we can continue a good latch and I will start to heal. One of the things that is consistent in both books that concerns me a little is the issue of pooping...yes, I am back to that again!!!! =) Lauren only poops about 2 times a week....that is actually an improvement. When we first came home, it was once a week. She passed meconium fine in the hospital and has plenty wet diapers but the books say that if baby has less than 1 poopy diaper PER DAY that it is evidence that they aren't getting enough high calorie milk. Well, I talked to the pedi about it at our 2 week appointment and she said that it is normal for BF babies to only go once or twice a week because most of the milk gets absorbed and it was okay since she was gaining weight. At her 2 week appointment, she still was not back to her birth weight but the doctor wasn't concerned about that either because she said that larger babies at birth sometimes have a harder time regaining all of their weight. She only weight 9 lbs, 5 oz at her 2 week checkup. A week later, she was 10 lbs even and then another week after that she was 10 lbs, 7.5 oz so she obviously is gaining weight. I am anxious to see what she weighs now. I think she is doing fine but reading stuff like that makes me fear that she isn't getting enough milk. It is possible that she, like Rachel, inherited her mother's digestive system and will always have problems....I am perfectly healthy except for my GI problems....sorry, girls!

Here are some pictures from yesterday....

Well, I don't like it. There, I said it. I don't think that it's a huge surprise to everyone that I don't like change. I hate it, actually. It's scary and uncertain and it totally gets me out of my routine...wonder where my children get the whole thing of needing a routine....guess we now know!!!

We are going through changes....

Obviously the biggest change we have gone through lately is having another baby. That was a major change but good. It was challenging at first but I had months to prepare myself and it was a planned change. We are adjusting and life is good.

The newest change that we are going through is that my husband is changing jobs. He has been with Ernst & Young Accouting Firm for 12 1/2 the job even before he was finished with graduate school. It is all he has known and he has absolutely loved working for them. He was at the top and doing well. They were a great company to work for. He had great benefits and they were super, I mean, SUPER to their employees and their families. was time for a change. It is still not certain when his last day will be with them but he will soon be starting a new job with Ennis Paint, Inc. It is in....Ennis....go figure!! =) They also have an office in Dallas. It is scary and it makes me nervous but Brice is very excited about it. He is ready for a change and he is looking forward to doing something new. Less travel than before and he won't be quite as busy during "busy season" as he was at E&Y. I just want Brice to be happy and obviously want our family to be provided for which Brice will always do...I have no doubt.

Speaking of work...

I am on the schedule to go back!!! I am actually pretty excited about it. Human, adult interaction outside my 4 walls sounds spectacular!!!! Since we follow doctor's orders closely, we will not take Lauren around large groups of people until she has her shots...May 14th!! I haven't been to church in a REALLY LONG TIME besides Krista's shower last Sunday. I am ready to be out and about. In May I am working the 16th, 30th and on Memorial Day. Brice will have the girls the days I work.

We bought Rachel a sand and water table yesterday since she loves to be outside and aside from the swingset/slide that we bought her last year, she has nothing outside to play with. She LOVES the sand and water table.

We went outside and played earlier before it got too hot...odd for me to say in April, I know but it was hot yesterday and Rachel gets so red in the face (just like her momma) when she gets hot so I don't like for her to play outside too much in the heat. Lauren sat outside in her bouncy seat and LOVED it! I actually captured one of her sweet smiles on camera. She has been smiling for about 3 weeks now....she started smiling a lot earlier than Rachel. She is 6 weeks old today!!!! I will upload pictures from outside later today. We plan on getting out to go visit Chelsea and Krista this afternoon. It won't be long before Baby Melody is here and I want to visit with Krista before both of our lives are nuts!!! She only has 5 more weeks until her due date!!!!

Can't Figure It Out!

I need help from my blogger friends....

So, as you can see, I still have the "Rachel's Mommy" thingy at the bottom of each of my posts. Well, I AM still Rachel's mommy but I am also Lauren's mommy and I would like to take that off until I can make another graphic to go there. Problem is....I can't remember how I got it on there so that I can go back there and take it off!!!! =) Does anyone know how?

Never Wake a Sleeping Baby??!!

I wish I could tell you how many times I have heard this phrase! Mostly, in my experience anyway, it has come from older generations of people...people that I love and admire and very much heed their advice and wisdom. However.....

I woke Rachel many times when she was an infant and I wake up Lauren too...for several reasons. Rachel was SUCH a sleepy baby. I mean, I don't think we saw her eyeballs at all until she was a month old...seriously. That is why she had to spend time in the NICU. She was lazy! Anyway, at first, she would have never eaten had I not woken her up. I think she would have slept through the night the first night home if I hadn't woken her up. Then, as she got to be about 2 months old and still waking up and staying awake frequently during the night, I decided I had to try and keep her awake more during the day in order for her to sleep at night. Yes, babies sleep a lot but not 22 hours a day and she was choosing to be awake when I wanted to be asleep. Perhaps it was selfish of me and that was my basis for waking that sleeping child....who knows?!

Lauren...well, as you know, she was a large baby at birth weighing in at a whopping 9 lbs, 9 oz and was 21 1/4 inches long!!! She lost down to 8 lbs, 14 oz by the time she was 4 days old. The doctors don't want babies to lose more than 10% of their birth weight and then they want them to gain it all back by 2 weeks. At 2 weeks, Lauren was still only 9 lbs, 5 oz. The pedi instructed me to continue waking her up during the day and at night to feed in order for her to thrive and continue gaining weight. At 1 month, she weighed 10 lbs, 7.5 oz so she is doing better. I don't feel like I need to wake her at night anymore. The other night when she slept for 7 1/2 hours and my body was used to feeding her WAY more frequently than that I was hurting...really hurting. So, if you are wondering what I did after I posted my last blog, luckily she woke up at 6:30 so I fed her...only on one side since it was so full, that's all she needed. Then I pumped from the other side and got 4 oz out of that one!! I am telling you, I was long overdue! Last night she woke up at 3:15 and again at 7:30 so I didn't have quite the problem as the night before but I was still very full at 3:15...5 hours.

So, I listen and will probably always wake a sleeping eat, at least!

AND...NEVER in a million years thought I would be blogging about such things....hmmm....

Question of the Morning....

Do I wake a sleeping baby who has been asleep for 7 1/2 hours to feed her or do I pump????? Something has to happen or I literally might explode!

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO thankful for a good night's sleep but it takes some getting used to with this new found occupation of mine: dairy cow!!!!!

She's Getting It!!

I hope not to jinx anything by writing this post but I think that Lauren is getting the whole "sleeping at night" business down! She has gradually gotten better and I thought at first it was because she was sick but last night she slept from 11:00 until 5:45. Rachel woke up at 5:15 screaming (she had a rough night). I woke up in almost a panic because Lauren hadn't woken up yet. I was hurting and thinking about what to do as far as feeding her because she was not even stirring. I went ahead and pumped after debating what to do. She woke up about 5 minutes after I pumped...go figure! I pumped 6 oz!!! I am a dairy cow!! Anyway, I let her nurse for a little while and then gave her some of the bottle. She didn't eat much but was wide awake so I took to her bed with me. I am a little concerned about what happens when/if she starts waking up in the middle of the night again and my body isn't producing enough milk to feed her. This breastfeeding thing sure does get tricky!!

Today is Krista's shower and I am excited to finally see all of my friends!!

What Do I Think?

Glad you asked!!!!

Well, the question and comments have been "Do you think Lauren looks like Rachel?" and "OH my goodness, they are identical!"

Here is what I think....
I think Lauren looks like Lauren and Rachel looks like Rachel. Yes, I am their mother and I have a want for them to be their own person. HOWEVER, I do think that they favor and I do think that in certain pictures it is very hard to tell which one is Lauren and which is Rachel. I posted a bathtub picture not too long ago and they look almost identical. Here are some other pictures of them at the same age.

Rachel Birth

Lauren Birth

Rachel 2 weeks

Lauren 2 weeks

Rachel 1 month

Lauren 1 month

The main difference to me is that Lauren has more petit features. Her facial features are smaller. I also think they have different eyes. YES, I know they do look very similar but they are sisters!!! =)

Photo Post

This is going to be a post full of pictures....I am playing catch up.

The first ones are of us dying Easter eggs on Saturday. Rachel had a blast.

The second pictures are of Easter Sunday.

And the last set of pictures are from the professional photo shoot today. Lauren cried for most of it...amazing how they were able to get any good pictures! Rachel was an angel. She was so excited about getting her picture taken.

Way Behind!

I got the girls' pictures taken today and I will put them and Easter pictures up later. I am so behind!!!

Gotta feed the munchkin.

Sick Mommy

I am sicker than sick!!!! I am not sure why I was the last to get "this" and now am sicker than anyone else!!! Doesn't make sense!

I went to the OB today for my post partum check-up. Everything is great! She released me so I can workout again and go back to work (in May). I do have mastitis which might be cause for some of my cold symptoms...fever, chills, etc. I am on an antibiotic. It is always kinda sad for me to when I deliver and then realize that I will only being seeing the doctor once a year. I know that sounds weird but you develop very close relationships with your OB/GYN. I saw her every month, then every two weeks, and then every week, and at the end twice a week for 9 months! She is a great doctor and I hope that if we decide to have another baby she will be around to deliver that one too!! figure out what is safe to take while breastfeeding for this cold!!!!!

Sick Baby

I have a sick baby!! My 1 month old (today) has a stuffy nose, cough, and watery eyes. We are all under the weather, actually. I have a sore throat and runny nose, Rachel has a nasty nose, and Brice is coughing. It is hardest on the little one though because she has a hard time eating and sleeping. I think I will call the doctor in the morning just to make sure she doesn't want to see her since she is so little. I took pictures today of the girls that I will post later.

Daddy Time!

It's been a little bit since I have is the update!

We had an appointment with an endocrinologist at one of the children's hospitals on Monday. She did VERY well at the appointment. She really liked the doctor. He was very knowledgeable and I felt confident that he absolutely knows his stuff. He took an x-ray of her hand to track her skeletal age. He basically (using a lot of fancy words) said that she is big. He said that he isn't really worried about it since her weight has sort of plateaued since November. She is still 41 lbs and that's how much she weighed at her 2 year well child checkup. She is 38 inches which is the 95th percentile! She is just big overall. He mentioned something about early puberty which completely took me off guard since she is TWO YEARS OLD!!! He said that rapid growth can be a sign of that but he didn't see anything that indicated early puberty. He also did some blood work to make sure she doesn't have diabetes or that her thyroid isn't abnormal. He wants to see her every 6 months and so we don't have to go back until November.

She is doing MUCH better today than she has all week!!!! She is such a pleasant and happy baby today and I am not sure what the difference is. She is only wanting to eat between 3 and 4 hours and likes to lay in her bed and look at the ceiling fan. She slept well last night, only waking up (after going to bed at 10:30) at 1:30, 4-something, and then I woke her up again to eat at 8:30!!! YIPPEE!!! I got some much needed stretches of sleep. The night before was AWFUL!!! She was up from 12:30 until 5:00 so I definitely needed something different last night. She is nursing well and my milk seems to be in good and maintaining. I am still sore but we are working on latching issues. I am still pumping some but I realized that pumping after she ate was only making more milk than she needed. I am hoping we are getting in a good rhythm and that things will only get better from here. She went to the doctor on Wednesday and weighs 10 lbs even!!!! She gained 11 oz in a week and a half! Good job, Sister! We go on Wednesday for her 2nd Hep B shot and another weight check. Oh, and she is already sleeping in her crib. I can't believe I already have her in there but she sleeps better in the bed than the pack n play.

I am doing well! I am sleep deprived and really trying to figure out how to balance time for me, my husband and two children but I am blessed. I am so incredibly thankful to God for giving me such a great family. I absolutely do not deserve anything that I have but He is faithful and so so good. I go back to the doctor on Monday and hopefully everything will be healing well and I can return to work in May. I am really excited about going back to church but won't get to do that until after Lauren's shots which she gets on May 14th. I will miss Mother's Day which I was originally thinking would be our first Sunday back since she will be 2 months old on the 12th but...o'well. We will be going for Baby Dedication which will be Mother's Day but we will just go for that and leave.

Daddy is home!!! For 2 weeks!! Brice gets paternity leave as one of the benefits with his firm. He gets two weeks of paid leave to spend time with his family and new baby. He took off starting yesterday and will be here for the next two weeks! YAY! We have some stuff planned but mainly are just going to be a family and enjoy each other. I ask that you pray for Brice. He is stressed from work and needs prayers.

Today is Good Friday and my heart is just full of praise. I don't know if I am really missing church or what but I am just overwhelmed by the gift of Jesus Christ. I have really been thinking about the last week of Jesus as I do every year at this time but I have had time to sit and think about it. Today is a day of mourning...for our Saviour but the story does not end there! HE IS RISEN!!!! Not only did He rise that day but He is risen TODAY! He is coming back for us and we need to be ready. I have been in sort of a "spiritual funk" for awhile but I was thinking the other day about what Easter means and how thankful I am for a Saviour who came and is coming again!! Praise God!! May you find joy in Him this Easter season!! Here is a song...a really old song but a new version that I absolutely LOVE!! Enjoy!

"Baby Friendly"

So, what does the term "baby friendly" mean to you? Well, there are a lot of different things that come to my mind but I heard this used during my recent hospitalization to have my youngest child and when asked what it meant, this was the response I got.....

"This is what we refer to when talking about breastfeeding. We are trying to be "baby friendly" and encouraging all moms to breastfeed as opposed to bottle feeding."

Let's back up...

We were getting discharged from the hospital to take Baby Lauren home and our nurse (who utterly irritated me about several things) said, "Oh, since we are baby friendly now, we don't give patients diaper bags anymore so here is a lunch bag." She continued to tell me something else which I totally tuned out because I was still stuck on this whole "baby friendly" idea. I stopped her and said, "What does baby friendly mean?" Her response is above after she said, "Oh, I can't believe you haven't heard of it." I frankly couldn't either. I mean, goodness, I was in that hospital for 15 days and I have worked there for more than a year and I have never heard anything like this.

She went on to explain that all of our hospital system is going "baby friendly" and soon will not offer any assistance to moms who don't breastfeed. I stopped her again with this question: "Is that not offensive to some moms?" She said smuggly, "Yes, it is to some but it's what's best for the baby." By not offering assistance, she means they will no longer provide formula for bottle fed babies at the hospital and they are doing away with all pacifiers provided by the hospital. She said that if moms choose to bottle feed, they must bring supplies from home in order to do this. She even went further to tell me that soon they will not have newborn nursery in our hospital anymore and have taken it out of one of the hospitals in our system. She said that having a newborn nursery encourages moms to not bond and feed their babies in the middle of the night. ****I haven't given an opinion yet but let me do that right now about the previous statement.****I bonded with my baby and the nurse in the nursery brought me my baby every 3 hours for me to BREASTFEED her and the ONLY thing that the newborn nursery encouraged me to do was know that thing that is essential for a new mom who has just gone through LABOR and needs rest before returning home with not one but TWO children!!!!

I was completely dumbfounded. I just could not believe this. Now, let me say that I am all about breastfeeding. I tried with my first and was minimally successful but with my second baby, I am exclusively breastfeeding. WHY am I doing this? Because I feel that it is what is best for my baby. Let me be real honest and transparent here...I am not crazy about breastfeeding. I enjoy bonding with my baby and I get satisfaction knowing that I am doing something good for my baby BUT my first child is FINE....healthy and fine and she only got 1-2 oz of breastmilk a day for about 3 months. Lauren is 3 weeks old and I have been successfully breastfeeding for 3 weeks but there have been NUMEROUS times where I have wanted to throw in the towel, break out the formula (or frozen breastmilk) and give up!!! My boobs are SUPER SORE, the baby eats constantly, I don't know how much she is getting and it is just hard. It is of the hardest things I have ever done....breastfeed. Who woulda thought??!! But, I press on....the breast pump was too expensive as well as the formula and again, I know deep down it is what is best.

I feel that there is SO much peer pressure and pressure from media and hospitals and doctors, etc to breastfeed. The worst part about it is that the world view is that you are not "baby friendly" if you choose not to breastfeed. My best friend from high school CHOSE not to breastfeed simply because she did not want to. I don't think she is less of a person or a mom for not doing that. It is a CHOICE...A CHOICE!!!! Just last night I was in tears telling Brice how wrong I think it is that society paints this picture of a horrible mom is she does not "do what is right" for her baby. When I couldn't and ultimately quit pumping for Rachel I cried....I realized later it was because I was afraid that people would think I was a bad mom not because I was truly upset that she wasn't getting breastmilk anymore.

I say all of this to say that I am FOR breastfeeding IF it is what you or I choose. I have chosen it with this baby. Will I do it with the next one? Probably...or maybe not. I don't know. What I do know is that whatever the choice is, I still consider myself "baby friendly."
